(2007) -- Many corporations have taken positive steps towards energy efficiency by retrofitting their facilities with the latest technologies. By contrast, Qualcomm has employed a ground up approach, incorporating energy-saving strategies into its new construction projects consistently since the early 1990s.This wireless communications company owns or leases over 4 million square feet of building space in San Diego alone. And since 1993 their projects have saved more than 10 million kilowatt- hours of electricity annually. Recently, they've completed building projects that further exemplify Qualcomm's commitment to environmental stewardship and enerqy savings, and round out the company's effort towards Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System Gold certification. Qualcomm Recognized by City of San Diego for Environmental Achievements
(June, 2005) -- Qualcomm was recognized by the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department (ESD) at an awards ceremony hosted by Mayor Dick Murphy and Elmer Heap, Director of ESD. Qualcomm was selected as 2004 Recycler of the Year for continued excellence in waste reduction, re-use and recycling. When presenting the award, Murphy stated, “Qualcomm has established itself as a long standing leader in San Diego.” Lyn Hall and Mark Passamani from Qualcomm’s Environmental, Health and Safety Department were on hand to receive the recycling honor.Qualcomm was also awarded the Climate Wise Energy Star Partner of the Year for our achievements in energy efficiency, community involvement and commitment to the environment and sustainable practices. Qualcomm annually saves 12 million kilowatt hours and over $1.4 million through use of energy efficient equipment, practices and employee education. In the future Qualcomm will continue the energy savings by installing a 100 kilowatt photovoltaic system, and using more hybrid vehicles in our internal fleet.
